The Coast of Christmas Past

December is upon us and we're like little kids when it comes to the magic of the season! With a flurry of holiday activities this month, we can't complain about the mild temperatures we've been having here on Cape Cod - although a cozy white Christmas would warm our hearts. We're definitely jumping up in down with excitement over the festive holiday season in our classic Cape Cod towns.

Harwich kicks off their holiday season this Friday December 4th. Santa will arrive by fire truck and offer season's greetings to everyone - we hope you haven't been too naughty! The annual lighting of the tree is something we definitely hold our breath for each year. The countdown, the illumination, the crowds reaction to seeing the spectacle is always a highlight. We don't want to play favorites but we adore the horse drawn carriage rides - a family favorite to remind you of days of yore... We can't wait!

Chatham's Christmas Stroll is set for the following Friday December 11th. With offerings of cookies and cocoa from the businesses along Main Street we'll definitely be feeling as jolly as Old St. Nick. There is something for everyone at this stroll - including prizes, raffles and even breakfast with Santa the following morning at The Wayside Inn.

Don't stress this season about finding the perfect gifts for everyone on your list. Christmas is a time for caring. Think about your family and friends, what would really they really enjoy? Look back on a memory, your mom loved the chowder the last time you were at  400 East, why not get her a basket full of gift cards to use on a special day you've planned for just the two of you? Take her out for that chowder, relieve her stress with a massage from Knead A Massage, arrange a private wine tasting at a local vineyard, take her out to a movie. Live History Without a Time Machine

Everyone knows that The Mayflower landed at Plymouth Rock, but we bet that you didn't know that it was Provincetown, Cape Cod where they first anchored on November 11, 1620 before they continued on to Plymouth over a month later. We know in summer traffic it certainly feels like it takes us a month to get to Plymouth too! Cape Cod has a rich history and what better time to learn about it than in November, the month of Thanksgiving, the month of the Pilgrims and Native Americans.

Pilgrim Monument - Provincetown Cape Cod

Here on Cape Cod the evidence of the Pilgrims can be seen in our architecture, our businesses, our close-knit local communities, and even our residents - some of whom descend directly from the first settlers on Cape Cod. The Pilgrim Monument was built to commemorate the first landing of the pilgrims in Provincetown. If you reach way back in your brain, The Mayflower Compact should ring a bell. Now, do you recall where that document that sketched the outline of government in the New World was signed? If your memory of 6th grade history class is anything like ours, then probably not, but we'll tell you... it was while The Mayflower was anchored in Provincetown Harbor. The Pilgrims continued to explore from Provincetown to Eastham for 5 weeks before making the decision to move on from Cape Cod. They would then land in Plymouth and the most famous rock on the East coast would come to be. You can tour the Pilgrim Monument and climb all of it's 116 steps to the top for a birds-eye view that is unrivaled anywhere on Cape Cod. Tall Ships in Provincetown Harbor

Thanksgiving is a time for family and being around a table beautifully dressed for a feast. Without The Mayflower landing in Massachusetts, we would not all be celebrating this holiday here together the way that we know it. So this November, let's look back on the past and the whispers of history while we gather together to revel in tradition and what we have here in the present. Let's not get consumed by the rush of the rest of the holiday season. Let's enjoy our time with our nearest and dearest and talk, laugh, and eat. Let's not run away from the dinner table early to wait in line for a sale; there will always be other sales, but there will never be another day just like today. Make memories, not purchases. Let's remember what this holiday is really about before jumping into the next one. Take a cue from the first Thanksgiving which lasted 3 days and take it slow. Relax, eat, drink, be merry, and most importantly be thankful for all that you have in front of you.

Cape Cod's Addition to the Kitchen: Farmers Markets

Locavore, in case you are like the NEVR team and have not heard this word before it is a growing term that gives definition to a new group of eaters. Locavore’s are not vegetarians or vegans but people who are ready to throw aside the pesticides and GMO’s and opt for nothing less than locally grown farm to table.  As chefs go back to basics they hope to leave a smaller eco-footprint than importing and keep their dishes packed with nutrients which is why Farmers Markets are in growing demand.

As we drove down Route 28 on Tuesday the crisp sweetness of kettle corn stopped us in our tracks and we could not help but pull over to the Chatham Farmers Market. With rambunctious red tomatoes, glistening blueberries and even some refreshing ginger beer from Farmer Willies

to quench our thirst we sampled each stands newest flavor and even got to speak with some of Cape Cods local farmers.

Chef Lisa, owner of Chef Lisa’s Home Grown Gourmet, is a private chef who had us hooked with her new watermelon gazpacho which tied in the perfect amount of playful sweetness with delicate spice. This creative culinary expert plans her menus around what is ripe and growing in each season whether that be Zucchini, summer squash or tomatoes. This true farm to table experience leads to an ever changing mouth-watering display that incorporates whichever harvest happens to be in abundance from the farm stands that were surrounding us.

Drooling over the organic salted caramel ice cream pops from The Local Scoop, Foss Farms famous tomato sauce and the dressing from the Paul Newman’s of Cape Cod, DD’s Dressing, we truly understood why this farm to table movement was spreading with such clout.   

We are not sure whether it was Chef Lisa’s delicious gluten free oatmeal chocolate chunk cookies, or Allen Farms savory basil, but whatever it was our team is going back next week for our local addition to the kitchen.

Cape Cod's Very Own Fenway Park

Kevin Youkilis, Mark Teixeira and Jason Varitek, do these MLB players sound familiar? Before these prominent players were drafted into the major leagues, they had to start somewhere and that somewhere was the Cape Cod Baseball League.

On the surface any Cape league game may seem like a player’s summer hobby.  When you look a little deeper, however, you will notice the vigilant recruiters jotting down stats, packed stands that line the field and fan’s beach chairs that have made themselves permanent for the             summer season.

These 10 Cape Cod teams  including the Harwich Mariners, Chatham A’s and the Orleans firebirds are bursting with talent from all over the country. Each day as the brilliant sunset comes to an end and those bursting field lights turn on for another night of 8 innings we can’t help but feel as though we are watching from the Green Monster in Fenway Park. What is blindingly exhilarating, besides the hot dogs that are grilled to perfection, is the fact that soon enough we will be seeing these young players on our very own major league teams. Whether these players join the Red Sox, Yankees or Braves, they are the future of the MLB and we get to watch them every night for free thanks to the     Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce.

While attending the games with friends makes for the perfect summer evening, our New England Vacation Rentals team wanted to dig a little deeper and see what these future hall of famers were really all about. What better way to do that then sit in on one of the Chatham A’s camp clinics. As we pulled up to Chatham’s Veterans Field it was impossible to ignore the light-hearted energy encompassing these normally competitive players.  With players AJ Puckett and Daniel Castano pitched under hand to the spirited campers it was hard to not want to join in on the fun. As Cameron Stone and Garret Williams took a water break they loved speaking about the welcoming host families they are grateful to live with this summer and rave about the friendly atmosphere they have become a part of here on the Cape.

Both the Cape Cod Baseball League games and each teams clinics are the perfect way to get involved with the local scene over here on Cape Cod.  These action packed games will leave you wanting more from these future MLB stars so check out the CCBL Schedule for the next game!

Hydrangea Heaven

We have all heard the saying anything is good in moderation, however, when it comes to Hydrangeas, our Cape Cod gardens surrender to excess. Cape Cod is a Hydrangea treasure trove and lucky for us July has these maritime flowers at the peak of their bloom. Year after year the cloud-like blooms bring about magnificent blues, pinks and whites. As Cape Cod Hydrangea Festival sweeps across the Cape we decided to bring our green thumbs 
to work to celebrate what may just be Cape Cod’s crown jewel flower.

While pruning and propagation may not be our strong suit it has not stopped us from clipping some hydrangeas to spruce up our office. From the perfect bouquet, centerpiece and even hair accessory the hydrangeas vibrancy creates an atmosphere that mimic our ocean-side homes. No Cape Cod garden would be complete without these powdery puffs of personality. Every flower has its own character and these brilliant pops of blue, pink and white encompass the guilty pleasure that is Cape’s simple lifestyle.

These works of floral perfection create a balance between playful and elegant aesthetics, unique to Cape Cod. With salty hair and sun kissed skin enjoy one of the Cape’s colorful characteristics and let the Hydrangea Festival garden gods help. New Memories or Deja Vu

It is no secret that yesterday every Cape Codder sourly had to flee their beach chairs and head home as the tornado warning encompassed New England. Now with the storm behind us every Cape Cod goer naturally must celebrate. This peacefully, glowing day brought the NEVR team back to the quintessential Cape life with the help of some of our joyful guest’s staying at 54 Hiawatha Road.

With the essence of mimosas in the air NEVR ventured to the Harwich home for a unique birthday brunch. Today was much more than a beautiful beach day for our featured guests but a day of reflection and fun as the family celebrates their sister, Erica’s, 60^th birthday. As fresh fruit and Bonatts Bakery pastries were being passed, the sisters explained why not only was this week for vacationing but for reminiscing over the house they once spent summers growing up in.

 54 Hiawatha was once the home to these wonderful women’s Grandparents and is filled with memories of lobster bakes, boating to Monomoy Island and outdoor showers. The birthday girl enthusiastically shared with us her favorite memories like biking to Pop Hansen’s on the way to the beach for ham sandwiches and Thompsons Clam Bar as the other sister, Deb, exclaimed that the Cape and Harwich especially was "a part of our blood."  For this family déjà vu is no coincidence but a welcomed anomaly that reminds them of the sweeter things in life here on Cape Cod.  We are so grateful to have shared both old and new memories with our featured guest of the week.

 We all have that dream of an imaginary place, our sanctuary. The place you feel homesick for even if have never been. Our cherished home away from home is Cape Cod. The minute we cross of the Sagamore Bridge we become new people. A sense of serenity and relaxation hits us like a wave crashing over the beaches of the National Seashore.
