A Seafood Way of Life

Fresh mussels steamed to perfection and warm french bread swimming in a white wine and garlic reduction instantly makes our mouths water. As we sit in our office daydreaming of dinner it is impossible to get our minds of the rich array of fresh seafood from mussels to the lobsters that the Cape is renowned for.
.
What lights up our eyes even more than our favorite surf and turf night is the ease of making our own catch. Start warming up that butter because clamming here on Cape Cod is much like a rite of passage and if you don’t mind digging your heels in and getting a little sandy then we have the spots for you.

For those ambitious eaters a steaming plate of mussels, clams, quahogs and oysters are just a rake, a bucket and some waders away. We spoke with the Harwich Director of Natural Resources, Henes Proft, who told us once you have purchased your shellfish permit (good for daily use or yearly) that any amateur mariner will leave with an overflowing bucket of Cape Cod’s finest during the calm low tide that visits the picturesque Pleasant Bay. Pleasant Bay is a serene location perfect for shell fishing, kayaking, fishing and just relaxing in the sun as it borders Harwich and Chatham.

Here on the Cape a vacation is not fully complete without some sort of fishing adventures, so if digging for these buried shellfish is not your forte fishing for Bluefish, Striped Bass and sometimes even Bluefin tuna can become a reality with boat charters. But for us here at New England Vacation Rentals watching the sunset with some fried calamari and oysters definitely does the trick. For more information on daily and yearly shellfish license visit Harwich Town Hall or Chatham Town Hall
